Federal Funding Education Technology Solutions

As of this March, there are now three federal Educational initiatives bills providing funds for schools; the CARES act, the CRRSSA, and the American Rescue Plan. Combined, these three bills total almost 200 billion dollars of relief; a massive help to educators and students struggling to catch up to pre-pandemic goals. Funding is retroactive to March 2020, and districts have until September 2022 to obligate their CARES act funds. That date is extended to September 2023 for CRRSSA funds.

These bills are intended to provide resources for three main goals:

  • Purchasing educational technology (including hardware, software, and connectivity)

  • Planning for and coordinating during long-term closures, including how to provide technology for online learning to all students.

  • Training and professional development for staff of the local educational agency

Each bill has funding buckets that are earmarked for specific purposes, and each has different times by which the funding must be obligated. With so many variables, it can be hard to know which funds to access and what they may be used for.

Many districts are planning to continue remote and hybrid learning support for the foreseeable future, making it more important than ever that networks and hardware are up to the job. With Federal Funding now available, there is no better time to upgrade critical infrastructure and enhance virtual capabilities.
